Advanced Searching (in Google)
Some clever tricks to improve your Google search results.
1. Using AND, OR, & NOT in Google (Boolean operators)
-
Use AND, OR, and NOT to combine /exclude search terms. This will provide more specific and relevant results.
Examples:
Genetics AND Cloning will only return results that contain both subjects.
Genetics OR Cloning, is much more broad.
Genetics NOT cloning will remove any results that reference cloning. You can add as many NOT terms to make your search much and more specific to your needs.
Other Examples:
*Taylor Swift NOT Travis Kelce.
*Renewable energy NOT solar NOT wind NOT hydroelectric.

2. Quotation Marks " "
Provides results that contain the exact quoted phrase.

Example:
"In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded" will get you a result.
"at the start there was nothing, which banged" will not.

"The Serabit el-Khadim stela of the Royal Butler Sobekhotep" will get you a result.
"The Serabit el-Khaam stela Ryal Butler Sobetep" will not.

3. Asterisk *
Provides results that contain all variations of what could come after the asterisk.
For Example:
Educat*
Will return results for:
-
Educate
-
Education
-
Educator
-
Educational
-
Educating
